Review of Midlife Bounty Hunter by Shannon Mayer

I have been reading Young Adult fantasy for a few years now, so when one of my favorite authors came out with this one, I was a little taken aback. I felt almost attacked. Yes, I’d love to believe that I could become a magical bounty hunter if I had to, even at my (ahem) “advanced age.” But I also know that I would be the first to be eaten by the werewolves. They wouldn’t bother trying to change me. Why should they, when I’m so nice and juicy.

But the story idea appealed. Most urban fantasy books are written with a young protagonist. And that can get tiresome after a while. So it’s nice to see a series written with a protagonist I can relate to. (She whines more than me, though. Okay, maybe she doesn’t.)

A Fast and Light Read

The protagonist is that most invisible of characters–the forty-something woman. Her scumbag husband divorced her and took everything she owned, including her grandmother’s house that she grew up in. She returned to Savannah, Georgia when her divorce was finalized and her grandmother was dead and buried. And began to try to pull her life back together.

First order of business? Find a way to buy her childhood home back from her ex.

But Getting a Job is Tough

And finding one that will pay for the down payment on a mortgage in just a few months is, well, unlikely. So when she is told about a job that pays as much as five-figures a month, she jumps at it.

There’s a catch, though. She has to allow magic and the sight back into her life. Plus, bounty hunting is a lot of physical effort. Plus, the rest of the team is certain that her old, pudgy body is not cut out for this kind of work.

I Would Read the Next Book in the Series

It’s not at the top of my “to read” list. But when I’m in the mood for a light fantasy with a kick-ass protagonist that is of legal drinking age, I know where to look.
